Materials
Red Heart Casual Cot’n (bulky weight, 4 oz/140 yd), 2 balls in Preppie
(I used just a teeny bit of the second)
“J” Hook (6.00 mm)
Stitch Marker
Yarn needle to weave in ends

Finished size
23.5″ circumference

Pattern Notes
This pattern is worked in the round with no joining at the end of the rows.
To make smaller, work only to row 9 or 10, taking time to measure the circumference to your preference.

Special Stitch
Cross Stitch : skip next sc, dc in next sc, dc in skipped sc

Pattern
Top
Ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook to form loop
Row 1: ch 1, 8 sc into loop
For every row hereafter, mark your first sc with your stitch marker to keep track of your rows.
Row 2: 2 sc in each sc (16 sc)
Row 3: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc); repeat around (24 sc)
Row 4: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc); repeat around (32 sc)
Row 5: sc in each sc around (40 sc)
Row 6: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc); repeat around (40 sc)
Row 7: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc); repeat around (48 sc)
Row 8: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc); repeat around (56 sc)
Row 9: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc); repeat around (64 sc)
Row 10: sc in each sc around (64 sc)
Row 11: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc); repeat around (72 sc)

Side
Row 12: Working in Back Loop Only, sc in each sc around
Rows 13 – 15: sc in each sc around
Row 16: sl st into first sc of last row (since you are working in a spiral, it is the stitch where the stitch marker is
currently), ch 3, work cross stitch around. You will have one extra sc at end of row – ch 1, join with sl st to ch 3.
Rows 17-18: sc in each sc around
Row 19: repeat row 16
Rows 20- 23: sc in each sc around

Brim
Row 24: Working in Front Loops Only, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc); repeat around
Rows 25 – 29: sc in each sc around; finish off
Weave in ends and enjoy!

Ah HAH! I knew I would run across this pattern if I poked around long enough…!

I saw this hat pattern in the 2007 Crochet A Day calendar as the “Tiffany Bucket Hat.” I then made one for myself the week after I bought the calendar, and that’s become my official Christmas Shopping hat – Lion Brand’s Covered Bridge red (Homespun) with a green Christmas tree pin on it. It’s so cool that even the guys in the hardware department at the local Home Depot notice it.

This year I needed a few Christmas gifts quick, and I dug up this pattern again. I made one for almost everyone, each with a different yarn from a chenille type to a double-strand of light worsted-weight. The great thing I discovered is that as I varied the yarn, this pattern made a totally different hat every time. No one would even have guessed their hats were all from the same pattern!

Now all my friends keep borrowing my copy to make hats… so I keep losing it! Now I finally know where it is and next time I get my pattern back and someone else wants a copy, I will send them here (instead of losing mine)!

I am so happy to hear you love the pattern! I’ve lost my original hat that I used for the design and have been trying to decide which yarn to use for its replacement. I may have to try Homespun because I love the color play in their yarns.

I just finished my bucket hat using Red Heart Super Saver in Camouflage….it looks awesome! So simple and fast…..the type of projects I like! Plan to make more, just need to decide what color yarn to use next.
I think there needs to be a correction on your pattern…Row 5 (32 sc)

I made several of these hats for Christmas gifts about three years ago, and they were a huge hit. This year, I have finally decided to make one for myself. This is my favorite hat pattern, very easy to make, and also makes a fab winter hat if using an alpaca/Lion Brand wool yarn combination. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern.

Thanks so much for the pattern. Going to try it tonight. The inspiration for the bucket hat came from a TV series on PBS called Rosemary and Thyme. Laura wore a crocheted bucket hat in pastel stripes with little flowers here and there on the crown. It’s more squarish that yours with a ridge where the crown and the top come together, and a real defined brim, but I think I can work it from your pattern. Thanks again! LeeAnn
